Stuart Brown of Castle Eden Golf Club produced two outstanding rounds to claim the County Seniors Championship for the second time, adding the 2026 title to the championship he first won in 2020.
The two-day championship, held on 1st and 2nd July, attracted a field of 102 competitors who enjoyed a golf course presented in exceptional condition throughout the event.
The opening day provided ideal scoring conditions, with warm sunshine and just enough breeze to keep players comfortable. Those favourable conditions changed dramatically on the second day, however, as strong winds swept across the course, creating a stern test of skill and patience. The gusting wind, combined with the exceptionally fast and beautifully prepared greens, made controlling approach shots and judging pace on the putting surfaces extremely challenging.
Such were the anticipated conditions that, before play commenced on the final day, the greenkeeping team took the decision to alter several planned hole locations. The original pin positions, combined with the forecast wind, would have made putting excessively difficult. Their judgement proved to be the right one, ensuring the championship remained a fair but demanding examination of golf.
The presentation of Castle Eden’s golf course received universal praise from the competitors, with players consistently commenting on the outstanding condition of the course and the superb quality and pace of the greens. Head Greenkeeper Anthony McGough and his team deserve enormous credit for producing a course of championship standard despite the challenging weather conditions.
Stu Brown emerged as a deserved champion after rounds of 68 and 74 for a two-over-par total of 142, finishing three shots clear of the chasing pack.
John Kirkpatrick of Ramside Golf Club was runner-up for the fourth successive year, while Keith Flinn of Chester-le-Street Golf Club finished third and Ian Hendry of Seaton Carew Golf Club was fourth. Remarkably, John, Keith, and Ian all finished on 145, with the placings decided by countback.
The victory also created what is believed to be a unique piece of county golfing history, although official records are still to be checked. Stuart’s success follows that of his son, Chris Brown, who won the County Match Play Championship in May, and it is believed this could be the first occasion that a father and son have both won county championship titles in the same season.
The championship was also a tremendous success away from the competition itself, thanks to the efforts of everyone at Castle Eden Golf Club. The club’s members, committee and staff were outstanding hosts throughout the two days.
Special thanks go to Club Secretary Mick Clucas, whose support and assistance to the County Secretary was first class and played a significant role in the smooth running of the championship.
Much appreciation goes to the Club Captain, Rob Carlisle, for supporting the Championship and, along with County President Bernie Munroe, for presenting the prizes to the worthy winners.
Lorraine and Mick Smith, together with the catering and bar team, also provided exceptional hospitality throughout the event, ensuring that all 102 competitors, officials and visitors were superbly looked after.
The 2026 County Seniors Championship will be remembered not only for Stuart Brown’s excellent victory but also for the outstanding quality of the venue and the warm welcome provided by everyone at Castle Eden Golf Club.
