                                  DURHAM COUNTY GOLF UNION SENIORS


Minutes of the 53rd Annual General Meeting held at Wearside Golf Club on Wednesday 17 November 2021.

1. Present

Messrs A. Garrity, President, DCGU, W.G. Dunn BEM (Chairman), I. Watson (Hon Secretary/Treasurer), K. McAllister (Captain 2021), M. Thorpe (Captain 2022)

Council members; G. Golightly, R. Wilson and 14 others.

2. Apologies and Report of death

The death of Edward Bunting was reported and a minute’s silence was held in his honour.

Apologies for non- attendance were received from 13 members.

3. Previous AGM

There had been no formal AGM in 2020 as a result of Covid 19 and all membership and competition fees had been carried over to 2021. It was taken as read that there was nothing to report for 2020 .

4. Chairman’s Report

The Chairman welcomed the County President and thanked the Council and the Secretary/Treasurer for their efforts in running the 2021 competitions. Entrants were down from previous years, possibly because of the uncertainty of Covid 19. He thanked the outgoing Captain for the work he had done over a number of years in his role and welcomed the new Captain. He also thanked the outgoing Secretary/ Treasurer and welcomed the new him one.

5. Secretary/Treasurers Report

The Secretary thanked his predecessor for his prior work and for his assistance in learning the role. He thanked Woodham GC, Whitburn GC and Eaglescliffe GC for hosting the 2021 competitions and apologised for the late cancellation of the final competition at Garesfield GC because of torrential rain particularly to those whom had travelled. He explained the change to electronic communication in an effort to provide members with up to date information.

He gave a brief overview of the end of year accounts explaining the loss is mainly due to a much reduced income in 2021. A poster has been prepared for issue in the County packs for clubs to display to encourage new members. He explained a change of bank account to enable payment by electronic transfer as well as cheques to make the process more efficient.

6. Captains Report

The Captain produced his final report, which summarised all the seasons fixtures. He expressed his disappointment that the season didn’t go as well as hoped. Particularly disappointing was the Big 6 competition successfully hosted by Wearside as a very strong side was put out.  He praised S. Brown for finishing joint 2nd in the Scottish Seniors and to I. Hendry for winning the Durham Seniors Championship with S. Brown being runner up. He thanked everyone for their assistance and support during his captaincy and wished the new Captain Mark Thorpe success in the role.

Hard copies of the Reports were available to all attendees and will be published on the DCGU website following approval of the minutes.

7. Election of Council Members

Members had been notified of the nominees to the Council roles, and were appointed unopposed. There remains a vacancy on the Council and any interested members have been asked to put their names forward to the Secretary.

8. Proposals

There were 5 proposals put to members, consequently  4 of which were to confirm the status of the competitions going forward and to update their descriptions on the website. The competition proposals were unanimously agreed.

The 5th proposal was in to ask members if future AGMs should be informal? Some attendees thought the AGM should revert back to a formal lunch and presentation. It was agreed members would be polled for their views at the 2022 competitions.

9. Presentations

Prizes were presented to those winners in attendance, the Secretary will seek to arrange distribution of prizes to those not in attendance.

10. Any other business

The DCGU President addressed the meeting, thanking officials and attendees for their support and wished the Senior section future success adding his congratulations to the winners. In closing he said that he appreciated how difficult it is to get volunteers to assist organisations but encouraged people to step forward.

The meeting closed at 11.25 a.m.
